Josh Phillips

We’ve decided to keep this page in memory of Josh

Hi! I’m Josh, and welcome to my page of the Open Mic Surgery Website.

I’m the regular compere of the Wednesday nights down at the Stubbing Wharf. I generally play quite early on in the evening, as I can then concentrate on rabble rousing, and making sure everyone gets a go. I’ve never completely forgotten to put anyone on (though it has come close!), but I’m a terrible one for forgetting people’s names. I once called Graham ‘Greg’ three weeks running. He was very nice about it, and let me keep my boyish good looks. ;-)

I learnt to play and sing (such as I can) busking around Europe just after I left school. I think it’s great training, as you need to learn to project yourself, and you only have as long as it takes someone to walk past you in order to make a favourable enough impression to part some of them from their cash. It’s also good cos if you make a fluff-up, thirty seconds later, your entire audience has changed, so even if people noticed, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t get rich, but I easily covered the cost of my travels.

My erstwhile band, The Tropes, has alas disbanded. It was fun while it lasted, and I’m sure Marcus, John, Mick and I will be playing again in some combination or other sometime in the not too distant. Meanwhile, I’m working on a few new songs, and trying to finish some old, half written ones.

This track is the one I’m proudest of. I recorded it at the marvellous Calder Recordings with Woody on drums and Mick on slide and trumpet.
